Tannourine village

Tannourine village

Tannourine, the warm land, was named so because of the large number of tandoors (Tannour) in it.

Tannourine is located at the foot of the western chain of the Wadi al-Nasara mountains, 60 km west of Homs, at an altitude of 400 meters above sea level. It has a beautiful nature that is evident in the spring, with its vast olive fields, and the many springs in it, where there are approximately 20 springs, including Ain Daoud, Ain Al-Khouria, Ain Al-Salat and Ain Al-Sahn.

The villagers’ businesses varied to earn their living between agriculture, crafts and industry. The abundance of springs made Tannourine a fertile land for agriculture and a good place for setting up water-powered wheat mills, including the Khoury Mill, the Western Mill and the Oil Mill.

People of the village also mastered the manufacture of lime, where the limestone “scattered in the region in abundance” is collected in “al-tannour”, using “ballan” plants to burn the stones until  become ashes of “lime”.

The village is famous for its ancient buildings, where there are two churches and a shrine, some of which date back 400 years.

Tannourine is administratively affiliated to the municipality of Nazareth. It is adjacent to the villages of Beit, Mashta Azar, Habanamra and Jewar Al-Afs. In the village there is a school, and several retail centers (dokan).
